What it is
Pico da Tijuca is the highest summit in Tijuca National Park at 1,021 metres, and one of the best viewpoints in Rio de Janeiro that does not involve a ticket queue. The peak rises from the rainforest in the heart of the city, and from the small rocky platform on top the whole of Rio unfolds: Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, the lagoon, the beaches and the bay, often with hawks circling at eye level.
How to visit
Reaching the summit is a moderate hike, usually guided, that climbs through the forest and finishes with a scramble up rock-cut steps with a handchain on the steepest section. Allow most of a morning round trip from the trailhead. The path is shaded for much of the way but exposed near the top, so bring water, sunscreen and grippy shoes. Set out early to reach the summit before midday cloud or afternoon rain closes the view.
