What it is
Christ the Redeemer is the 38-metre Art Deco statue of Jesus that crowns the 710-metre Corcovado mountain, arms outstretched over Rio de Janeiro. Completed in 1931 and named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it is the city's defining symbol and one of the most recognisable monuments on the planet. From the viewing terrace at its feet the whole of Rio unfolds: Sugarloaf, the bay, the beaches and the green sprawl of Tijuca Forest below.
How to visit
There are three ways up: the scenic cog train through Tijuca Forest, an official van service, or a guided tour that handles transport and tickets. Buy a timed entry in advance, as the site limits visitor numbers and queues build fast on clear days. Allow about an hour at the top for the statue, the terraces and the panorama. Go early on a clear morning before cloud rolls over the summit, and bring sunscreen, water and a light layer for the breeze at altitude.
